Lewis County Historical Society needs your interest and support. Please consider becoming a member of our museum and actively assist in the growth of our institution. We also seek bequests, memorials, and endowments to sustain our operations.

- Free admittance to select lectures and programs

- Free society publications

- Discounted admission to society events

Members pride themselves on being part of an organization committed to acquiring, preserving, and exhibiting for current and future generations the social, economic, political, educational, and industrial history of the area.

Memberships are on a rolling basis. When an individual joins, they will need to rejoin during the following year during that same time frame.

Corporate sponsorship and levels of donations vary to suit everyone's pocketbook.
Consider making your contributions at one of the following levels.

NELSON J. BEACH SUPPORTERS: contributions of $25 to $99
Nelson J. Beach was elected first canal commissioner of the
Black River Canal and was influential in the development of the area's commerce.


EBER KELSEY SUPPORTERS: contributions of $100 to $499
Eber Kelsey, one of the first settlers of Port Leyden, constructed the first grist mill. The surrounding settlement was known as Kelsey's Mill.


GENERAL WALTER MARTIN SUPPORTERS: contributions of $500 to $999
General Walter Martin served in local government and brought the first county seat to Martinsburg.


JONATHAN COLLINS SUPPORTERS: contributions of $1,000 to $4,999
Jonathan Collins of Turin acted as President at the convention held at the Freedom Wright House, Denmark, where the decision was made to separate both Jefferson and Lewis Counties from Oneida. Collins served as the first Chairman of the Board of Supervisors.


THEODORE B. BASSELIN SUPPORTERS: contributions of $5,000 to $9,999
Theodore Basselin, a lumber baron from Croghan, was appointed first Commissioner of the State Forest Commission.


FRANKLIN B. HOUGH SUPPORTERS: contributions of $10,000+
Dr. Franklin B. Hough, of Lowville, wrote the two earliest histories of Lewis County and was appointed first commissioner of American Forestry Preserve by President Grant.
